When I was younger I dreamed of a day when I would get paid to write articles. The first time I got paid was for an article published in a now-defunct Canadian magazine I was paid $125 dollars. I was really stoked and excited about that $125. I still have that cheque stub. It could have been $5 and I still would have been excited about it. This is because it’s not about the money. It is about people wanting to read what you write. I was surprised someone was willing to pay for my writing.

The definition of being human is having a thought and being able to communicate that thought to another person. This is why writing is so important. Writing is a way to not only communicate to one other person but to many, and maybe, just maybe, long after you are gone someone somewhere will read your thoughts. Writing is, in a way, a time-traveling superpower.

Somewhere along the way after having children I lost my muse and stopped writing regularly until I was only writing at work. Writing at work meant writing reports. I used the excuse of not having time to write. Looking back, I believe I was battling with stress and depression. The truth is we all have some time to do things but we let other items on our to-do list take precedence over the things we need to do. Writing can be therapeutic which in turn alleviates stress. I wish I could go back in time and tell myself to just sit down and write, but I can only do so in my imagination.
